South Africa: From Chokers to Champions, World Test Championship Final 2025

As Day 3 of the World Test Championship Final 2025 unfolded, the echoes of doubt surrounding South Africa loomed larger than ever. Critics had already labeled them as ‘chokers’, a label they’ve been carrying for decades. However, this time around, Team Temba was prepared to shed that reputation. Set a daunting target of 281 runs by Australia, South Africa seemed poised to make a statement.

With the pressure mounting and the weight of history dragging behind them, South Africa took to the pitch determined to break the chains of expectation. Aidan Markram and Temba Bavuma emerged as the heroes the team desperately needed. By the end of Day 3, they had impressively guided their side to 231/2, and the vibes in the air hinted at a possible triumph. It truly was a perfect moment that called for South Africa to choke, but lo and behold, they did not!

Day 4 proved to be a test of nerves as the game intensified. Runs were scarce, and with Australia’s fierce bowling attack, it was nail-biting for fans around the globe. Just 6 runs away from a historic victory, Markram’s exit at 136 left hearts bit gloomy. But, the final runs came off Mitchell Starc’s delivery, sending emotions skyrocketing throughout Lord’s. Temba Bavuma’s face said it all: ‘Yes, we have done it!’ Tears of joy, emotional hugs, and a standing ovation erupted, marking South Africa’s glorious transformation from ‘chokers’ to true champions.

So many instances that highlighted the amazing ebb and flow of test cricket.. missing the LBW on Webster and SA dropped chances; a captain’s spell from Cummins seemingly making an Australian victory inevitable; the unbelievable 73/7 turning into 207, with an epic 10th wicket partnership; Bavuma dropped on 2, then the calm resolve of SA to bat on and on despite the weight of history and expectation..
    test cricket is best cricket!
